Exhibit — Contemporary Mosaics
November 1, 2019 - January 5, 2020Free
Nov 1st – Jan 5th
Artist Reception: Saturday Nov 2, 2019 6-8pm
This exhibit will feature works from multiple artists at the Austin Mosaic Guild, who are seeking to push the boundaries in techniques, formats, and materials of mosaic art. The exhibit will focus on the state of contemporary mosaics today as well as ways in which traditional boundaries are being challenged by these contemporary artists. The Guild intends to enlighten visitors on the ways in which modern mosaicists are working as well as about the mosaic medium itself.
The exhibit will be juried by several well-known mosaic artists around the U.S., who will determine the final works that will be displayed. Each artist in the Guild (around 70) is encouraged to submit works for the exhibit, though only around 25 artists will be featured. Each work is made individually, with no two styles or subjects being the same between each artist. Though subject matter is boundless, the works selected for the exhibit will concentrate on non-utilitarian items in an effort to elevate the craftsmanship of mosaic to a fine art.
Over the last 30 years, the Austin Mosaic Guild has been a part of a resurgence in interest in mosaic art, especially in the Austin area. They have crafted a Pet Therapy wall at the Dell Children’s Hospital, a large mosaic at the Deep Eddy pool, and a stepping stone project at Austin Community College. Member Dianne Sonnenberg won “Best Architectural Mosaic” at the 2010 Mosaic Arts International for her sculpture “Ocean(egg)raphy”; member Lynn Bridge designed several panels for the University Presbyterian Church; and several other member have participated in the Breast Cancer Research Center’s “Art Bra” Fundraiser, where their works have sold for thousands of dollars that directly benefit the Cancer Center.
