About Your Instructor

Laura Fox-Wallis is an award-winning fiber artist and art educator living in Leander, TX. In 2004, Laura began to explore the diverse effects of silk painting and found a strong connection with the fluid movement and brilliant colors of the dye. Using medium-weight Habotai silk, steam-fixed silk dyes, and resist, Laura layers color to create form and texture, counting missteps as design elements that are sometimes more beautiful and interesting than the original concept. Laura’s silk paintings have been in numerous local, national, and international exhibits. Presently, Laura is a studio artist at ArtUs Co. in Austin and teaches silk painting to students all over the world via her online courses.

In 2020, Laura was awarded Master Silk Painter (MSP) by Silk Painters International (SPIN), an organization of silk artists, educators, and practitioners. A Master Silk Painter is considered an outstanding silk artist in their skills, creativity and expertise in usage of silk and dyes, design and color. When chosen, by committee, MSP status is considered to be a lifelong award. This award is her highest recognition to date, and as such, she will continue to inspire, educate, and share her expertise with others.

I build collages to tell a visual story, one layer at a time. I “paint” with torn paper, magazines, newspaper, handmade paper, cut paper—anything I can manipulate in layers to create art with dimension and texture. As a former ceramic sculptor and set designer, I enjoy using paper to bring ideas and imagery to life in a multi-dimensional way. About The Artist:

Alejandro Mendoza was born in the ancient Zapotec weaving village of Teotitlan del Valle, located in the state of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico.

He learned the generational art of weaving at the age of ten through his father Taurino Mendoza (creator of Taurino Mendoza's loom).
As a teenager, Alejandro moved with his family to Orange County, CA. The family business tasks included him traveling back and forth with the purpose of importing rugs and textiles.

As a result of these events, Alejandro gained a wide perspective on his culture and his potential, particularly on the weaving craft, that was when he started to thrive in the excellence of the art of weaving and hand-dying with vegetables dyes.

During his first years of college, he also worked and learned alongside his uncle Antonio Mendoza who is a master weaver.

At the present time, Alejandro works in his home studio in Orange County and at the family farm in Oaxaca (about three or four times a year) to dye the wool yarns. He exhibits at The Livewell Collective in Dana Point, CA, and at juried art shows in Southern California, Colorado, Texas, Utah, and other states.
